Dr. George and Sally Spears Scholarship
Maury Kolchakian didn’t think he was going to attend college, but when his high school counselor let him know of a Manatee Junior College scholarship given to him as the President of INTERACT club, he figured he had to attend. Fast forward to 2016, Mr. Kolchakian says that attending MJC was the best thing he ever did. Diana (then Keyser) and he met in class, and later on met Dr. George and Sally Spears, with whom this scholarship is in name of. “Dr. & Mrs. Spears were very generous and sincerely wanted to help young people. Dr. Spears had a passion for helping students who had the desire to learn from his wisdom. Diana and I were like “family” and we named our son in their honor (Griffin Spears Kolchakian).” Dr. Spears was the Dean of English, and was the chair of the Philosophy department at Manatee Junior College. He passed away in February of 1992. Maury and Diana Kolchakian want to emulate Dr. Spears’s inspiration and encouragement to students today by awarding scholarships to deserving students.
